What is Contributor Day?

Contributor Day is a hands-on event where you collaborate with other WordPress users and contributors to make WordPress better. You’ll sit at a table with others interested in the same team, learn how contributions work, and start contributing — even if it’s your first time!

You don’t need to be an expert. In fact, many attendees contribute for the first time at Contributor Day — and that’s exactly what this day is designed for.

What to Bring

To get the most out of Contributor Day, we recommend the following:

  • Laptop: You’ll need your own device to contribute effectively (essential for all teams).
  • Internet Access: Wi-Fi will be provided, but bringing a personal hotspot can be helpful as a backup.
  • Create a WordPress.org account: Sign up here: login.wordpress.org/register
  • Join relevant Slack channels (i.e. #core, #test, #design, #forums, #polyglots etc.) here: https://make.wordpress.org/chat/
  • Chargers, adapters, and headphones (if needed)
  • Curiosity, collaboration, and a helping mindset

Contributor Teams You Can Join

Here’s a breakdown of the teams available on Contributor Day — each welcoming new contributors with beginner-friendly tasks and mentorship.

Core Team

The Core Team is responsible for building and maintaining the very foundation of WordPress. Contributors to this team work on improving the WordPress software by fixing bugs, developing new features, and enhancing performance and security. Whether you’re skilled in PHP, JavaScript, or just eager to test and review code, this is a great team to dive into. You’ll learn how WordPress evolves behind the scenes and get a chance to shape its future. No contribution is too small — even testing or reporting bugs helps strengthen the Core.

Who can join:
Developers, testers, QA engineers, and technical writers.

What you’ll do:

  • Work on “good first bugs”
  • Set up local WordPress environments
  • Help triage issues or test patches

Skills helpful: PHP, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, React, or curiosity to learn.

Test Team

The Test Team focuses on ensuring the reliability and stability of every WordPress release. This group plays a critical role by testing new features, finding bugs, and verifying fixes before they reach millions of users. Whether you’re a manual tester or an enthusiast of automated testing frameworks, this team has room for your skills. Contributors are encouraged to join the #core-test Slack channel and follow the Test Handbook to get started. Every bug found or test performed helps improve the user experience for the global WordPress community.

Recent initiatives like WPCredits and Campus Connect highlight contributors’ efforts and engage students in open-source from an early stage. Whether you’re a writer, translator, educator, or designer, your contributions here have lasting impact by helping people worldwide teach and learn WordPress more effectively.

If you’re passionate about UI/UX, accessibility, or just want to create inspiring content layouts, this team is for you. Whether you design in Figma or directly inside the WordPress editor, your creativity can shape the building blocks used by thousands of users. Patterns are not just helpful — they’re empowering for non-designers to bring their ideas to life.

Who can join:
Designers, developers, and creative thinkers.

What you’ll do:

  • Submit or edit block patterns
  • Test designs across themes
  • Improve accessibility of patterns

Tools: Gutenberg, Figma, Pattern Directory.

Polyglots Team

The Polyglots Team makes WordPress truly global. By translating WordPress core, plugins, themes, and documentation into hundreds of languages, they make the software accessible to users everywhere. Whether you’re fluent in one or more languages, or skilled at proofreading and localization, your contributions ensure that language is never a barrier. You’ll be working in the Translate platform and Slack’s #polyglots channel, collaborating with a vibrant community of translators. Your words literally open doors for millions of users.

Who can join:
Anyone fluent in more than one language — no coding required.

What you’ll do:

  • Translate WordPress strings
  • Review or approve others’ translations
  • Help expand language glossaries

Skills helpful: Translation, grammar, eye for detail.

Support Team

If you enjoy solving problems and helping others, the Support Team is your place. This team helps users by answering questions in the WordPress.org forums, writing documentation, and offering guidance to both beginners and experienced users. It’s a fantastic starting point for those familiar with WordPress who want to give back without diving into code. Communication skills, empathy, and patience are key.
